Anonymous asked: hey jonathan, just wondering. i've been really interested to join semester at sea--but as an asian student, i'm honestly quite worried. will i be able to fit in? is there a lot of racism on board?
I too am an asian student and I can tell you, there was no racism on board. The ship was a very welcoming and awesome community. I didn’t experience or see any form of prejudice of any kind, racism, gender, orientation etc. All the students on my voyage were all really friendly and open minded. I think thats why we all decide to study abroad, to really experience different cultures and such.
The only prejudice/racism I encountered were from the local people in some of the third world countries I visited. Even so, it would be a small remark here and there, which is probably because in those countries, the locals don’t see a lot of asians. So it may be weird and different for them when tourists come through. I’ve gotten called Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan from some of the locals, which I figured are the only asian people they know. I didn’t really hold it against them, I figured they’re just not familiar with seeing a lot of asians.
If you’re considering joining Semester At Sea, I strongly encourage you to do so. It will honestly be a life changing experience that you will forever be grateful for, and cherish for the rest of your life. Even if you don’t choose Semester At Sea, you should still study abroad. This will be one of the few chances you’ll get to do so. You will not regret it.
